PhD Opportunity: AI for Diabetes & Metabolic Health

📢 PhD Opportunity: AI for Diabetes & Metabolic Health

Interested in AI that can transform diabetes care?

We are seeking motivated candidates interested in pursuing a PhD in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for diabetes and metabolic health at the Modeling & Intelligent Control Engineering Laboratory (MiceLab), University of Girona, Spain.

Our research lies at the intersection of control engineering, artificial intelligence, and biomedical research, focusing on the development of models and intelligent systems to better understand, monitor, and support human health.

The PhD position is linked to the Synulin AI project, which focuses on developing intelligent digital health technologies for diabetes management. The selected candidate will contribute to the design and development of AI-based methods for personalised diabetes coaching and clinical decision support.

Research Topic

The research will focus on developing intelligent methods that integrate patient-specific data to support personalised diabetes management. These data may include continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), insulin records, food intake, and other relevant physiological and lifestyle monitoring streams. The objective is to develop intelligent tools capable of providing personalised recommendations, proactive glycaemic alerts, and adaptive lifestyle coaching in a clinically grounded, reliable, and safe manner.Potential research directions include:

  • Machine learning and deep learning for digital health.
  • Deep generative models and large language models (LLMs).
  • Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and AI agents for personalised health support.
  • Time-series modelling and multimodal patient data integration.
  • Clinically grounded decision-support systems and safety-aware AI.
  • Integration with digital twin models and digital health platforms.

The research topic can be adapted to the candidate’s background and interests within the scope of the project.

Candidate Profile

We welcome applications from candidates with a background in one or more of the following fields:

  • Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence.
  • Data Science or Machine Learning.
  • Biomedical Engineering.
  • Health Informatics.
  • Electrical, Control, or Systems Engineering.
  • Other related disciplines.

Required or desirable skills:

  • Strong programming skills in Python.
  • A solid foundation in mathematics, statistics, or computational methods.
  • Experience with, or a strong interest in, deep learning, time-series analysis, biomedical AI, or intelligent decision-support systems.
  • Motivation to conduct interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI, engineering, and healthcare.
  • Good written and spoken English.

Previous experience in diabetes research or clinical applications is welcome but not essential.
