The research group Modeling, Identification and Control Engineering (MICELab), led by Prof. Josep Vehí, is looking for candidates.
Profile
Applicants must have completed a master’s degree in engineering (Computer Science / Electric or Electronic Engineering or similar) and have experience in Android programming and IoT device Integration. To be successful in this position, applicants must have extended experience in mobile app development:
- Proficient in mobile app development process from designing to deploying (Apple Store/Google Play)
- Management of repositories
- Integration with back-end systems and data services
- Experience working with React Native is a plus
- Familiar with using common third-party libraries.
As part of our research team, some examples of core responsibilities will be:
- Design new features and develop mobile applications in the area of the artificial pancreas
- Working with IoT paradigm for our connected diabetics management solutions
- Real-time integration with external hardware and sensors
- Development of an integrated mobile solution for related clinical trials
Qualifications
The successful candidate must be enthusiastic and greatly interested in research and technology transfer. Being proactive and willing to learn, with a “CAN DO” attitude and strong problem solving skills will be appreciated. In addition to this, excellent communication skills are important for this position and a good command of the English language is required.
In order to be eligible, the researchers must:
- Have completed the studies for admission to a doctoral programme between 1 January 2018 and the time of submission of the application;

Project term
Enrolment will start in 1st semester 2021. The Ph.D. student will be appointed for a period of one year, extensible up to three years. Enrolment and salary are according to the Spanish Universities regulations.

The MICELab Group
The MICELab group, led by Prof. Josep Vehí, is an interdisciplinary research group of the Institute of Informatics and Applications of the University of Girona.
The team is composed of experienced researchers from the control engineering field with expertise in systems and control theory, modelling and control of biomedical systems, uncertain dynamical systems, robust and predictive control and decision support systems. The group has extensive experience in the field of diabetes and is one of the leading groups in the development of the artificial pancreas worldwide. Since January 1st, 2018 the group belongs to the prestigious centre of excellence in diabetes CIBERDEM: “Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Diabetes y Enfermedades Metabólicas Asociadas”, being one of the few engineering groups of the centre.
Prof. Vehí has been researching in technologies for diabetes since 2004, obtaining more than three million euros of funding in a series of competitive research projects which have led to several patents and also tools, modules and a prototype of control device for use in clinical trials. He is co-author of more than 150 peer-reviewed International Journal papers and 12 books and chapters of books.
